Legends

The largest difficulty with determining which of the legends of Amber are accurate is one of dating. Most events are said to have happened "long ago." There is not a good, consistent dating system in place until the conversion to the Faith of the Thirteen, more than 5,000 years ago. Prior to that time, it is difficult to know even the sequence of possible events unless they are linked.

For example, the Durrendons and Baratheons claims Eric as the first of the Storm Kings, and say that he reigned for more than one hundred years. As he never took a wife, he abdicated the throne to his brother Corwin with his sister Deirdre as Corwin's queen consort. As the current Baratheon King claims descent from Corwin and Deirdre, this seems to be a plausible story.

However, the legends say that there were once wars between the siblings, leading to Eric Durrendon proclaiming himself High King of Amber, followed by his death (at the hand of Corwin and his army) five years later. While it is possible that King Eric served as the first Storm King, abdicated to his brother and sister, and then decided to claim the entirety of Amber as his, this seems less than likely. Further complicating matters, Deirdre is said to have died in the same battle as Eric, though she has a great many descendants who believe they could not be alive if that were true.

Other legends name Durran as the first of the Storm Kings, and claim his line descends from his union with a sea goddess. In this instance, it seems that perhaps a legend of the Iron Kings found its way into the alleged history of the Storm Kings.

The legends of Amber persist because there is no strong way to either prove or disprove them entirely. Scholars suggest that perhaps there is an element of truth in the legends, and perhaps an element of the fantastical pervades the early history of Amber.
