Founding of the Houses Casterly/Jast, Lannister, and Reyne and the Kingdom of the Rock

Oberon had three children by his third wife, Clarissa--Fiona, Bleys, and Brand:

Fiona, who took the surname Casterly, had two husbands:

  • King Jast Casterly (his descendants took the surname Jast)
  • King Mandor Casterly

Bleys, who took the surname Lannister, had one wife, and may have fathered other children by other women:

  • Emma

Brand, who took the surname Reyne, had one wife, and may have fathered other children by other women:

  • Selena

Queen Fiona ruled for about 200 years before her brother, Brand, took the throne. King Brand reigned for only 30 years, before Bleys and Fiona overthrew him. Queen Fiona's second reign lasted about 100 years, until Bleys tricked her into giving up the throne. King Bleys ruled the kingdom for about 100 years. He abdicated his title and his eldest son, Jacob Lannister, became king.

All three of the children of Clarissa and Oberon had a number of descendants, from whom their respective houses are descended. The only exception to this is the Casterlys (those descended from Mandor and Fiona), who died out completely by the end of Fiona's second reign. House Jast comprises all of Fiona's remaining descendants. Although House Lannister is the only Great House in the Kingdom of the Rock at this time, House Jast and House Reyne arguably have the right to be considered Great Houses as well. However, they and the other houses descended from the children of Clarissa's Brood are all Lesser Houses.

More rumors exist about bastards sired by Bleys than those sired by Brand. There is a surprising lack of rumors that either brother sired any children on their sister, despite this being prevalent in some other kingdoms. There is, however, a rumor that Julian Reed, Fiona's half-brother, sired at least one child of Fiona's.

Houses of the Rock

Their part in events B.F.

During the Long Night, some claim that all three of the children of Clarissa took part in the battles. The stories suggest that Brand might have been fighting on the side of the Others, and this may have spurred his brother and sister into taking action.

Though the bulk of the Wall was built from blocks of ice, many of the castles constructed during the Founding of the Wall were built from rock quarried in the Kingdom of the Rock. The Kingdom of the Rock is also notable in this time period because two eldest sons--the heirs of House Drox and House Stackspear--chose to relinquish their inheritance and join the Brotherhood of the Night's Watch. Steffon Stackspear was chosen as the First Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

Internal Events B.F.

The history of the Kingdom of the Rock is often one of boom and bust. Many towns were founded near a productive mine, but when the mine ran out of ore, the town was abandoned. Although few Lesser Houses banked their success upon the success of their mines, House Turnberry lost a sizable portion of their fortunes when they thought to build a new keep at the town of Bonedam, on the Tumblestone River. When the mine there dried up and Bonedam became a ghost town, House Turnberry retreated to their old keep. Eventually, they were able to make a savvy political marriage and replenish their coffers. The keep at Bonedam is now used as a warm weather retreat for the family, though it is said to be haunted by members of the family who committed suicide during the time of their reduced circumstances.

Their part in the founding of the Faith

Scholars from the Kingdom of the Rock penned books detailing the legends of the kingdom that placed the three elders of their kingdom at battles during the Long Night. In addition, a number of sages from the kingdom identified portents that suggested that the elders were active in Amber and discovered signs that might show later involvement. Tomes upon tomes of prophecy were prepared by these sages; a large number of these tomes remain at Casterly Rock.

Their part in events A.F.

The Kingdom of the Rock felt the impact of the Winter of Hunger as acutely as any other kingdom. There were one or two Lesser Houses that lost a sizable number of their members, but the remaining members fared better than the average inhabitant of this kingdom. Rumors that these families practiced witchcraft or cannibalism have circulated since, but only at the barest whispers, as there are some who say that these practices have continued.

The keeps of the Kingdom of the Rock were always well fortified, which proved useful when the Clash with the Baurig came. Those who defended the keeps and castles along the coast developed a number of new techniques for keeping invaders out during this time period.

Internal Events A.F.

About 3,500 years after the Founding of the Faith, a revival of interest in the Faith swept through the Westerlands. Nearly every family who had unmarried children sent one or more of these children to be trained as Tredecons or Tredeca, leading to an overabundance of holy men and women. More prominent families could afford to support several holy men and women, and their children were notably well educated for it. But there were a large number of Tredecons and Tredeca who were unable to attach themselves to a family, and instead had to serve as itinerant preachers, some going among the smallfolk, and others simply wandering the countryside. One group of the wanderers collected together and marched to Casterly Rock, where they appealed to King Blane Lannister to make a public decree, limiting the number of Tredecon and Tredeca that could be trained. King Blane refused initially, and the wanderers set up an encampment in Lannisport. When the townspeople joined in the pleas of the wanderers, King Blane finally acquiesced. A number of the wanderers eventually found their way to the Stormlands, where they claimed allegiance to the King there, as he was a descendant of The Wanderer, Corwin Baratheon.

Beginning around 5,500 A.F., scholars in the Kingdom of the Rock began noting a number of children born in the kingdom who did not share the physical characteristics of their parents. Dubbed the Night-Born, these children were uniformly possessed of black hair and dark colored eyes. Some of these children were killed as infants by their parents, and some were cast out of their homes (along with their mothers) as suspected bastards. In other cases, the children have remained in their family homes and been raised alongside their brothers and sisters. To date, the phenomenon has been exclusive to the Kingdom of the Rock, and has not been explained.

Current situation

The present king of The Rock is King Lucas Lannister. His first wife was a Serrett, who died without issue. His second wife was a Lefford, who died (after giving birth to a Night Born son, who also died) very recently. King Pycelle Hoare has offered King Lucas the hand of his daughter, Princess Bellegere Hoare, who he says is guaranteed to give him many sons. However, there are a number of families in the Kingdom of the Rock who are now presenting their eligible daughters to the young King as potential wives.

Barth Jast, heir to the Jast title and lands, is currently in a cell beneath Casterly Rock. Rumors are flying as to what he did to wind up there, but most point to the recent visit by Iron Islanders as related. At the same time, three sons of Lord Malleon Hawthorne were slain at Casterly Rock, and rumors point to the same culprits.
